What's Happening at the SoMa 76 Station at 4th and Folsom?

What is happening at the western corner of 4th & Folsom? Used to be a 76 gas station, now being excavated. Something to do with the new metro line?
Our reader nailed it—the gas station is giving way to the Yerba Buena/Moscone Station of the Central Subway. Throughout coverage of the new subway line, there's been lots of focus (read: controversy) on the North Beach and Union Square stations, so let's take some time to check out the plans for the new SoMa station. This leg of the Central Subway connects SoMa to the existing T line. The new station is designed to meet the current transit needs of the area, but also large enough to accommodate the expected explosion of growth in SoMa. Much like the other stations, there's lots of openness and natural light. This one will get a special art treatment, with photographs of the Moscone Center's construction in the 1970s sandblasted and laser-etched into stone panels on the concourse level. If the project stays on track, the station should be completed in 2017.
