Preserved Past Relevance?

New, 4 comments

It's 2013, and SF Gate's John King has announced that the Marquard's Little Cigar Store neon marquee has officially outstayed its welcome. The splendid period piece remains (though the store it advertises doesn't) because city preservationists determined it "a significant and familiar feature.....bearing witness to an important business type and signage style of a by-gone era." King's snappy rebuttal: "The relic endures. The culture that gave it meaning does not."[SF Gate]
