"There is a map in my office with a depiction of the shot tower. Before they could machine ball bearings they had to drip lead to get a round shape... the height of the tower correlated to the gauge of the shot. The taller the tower the larger they could make the gauge. It had to cool before it hit a pan of water located at the bottom of the tower.
