MUNI Picks Up Speed...A Little

New, 3 comments

The K, L, and M MUNI lines traveling through the Twin Peaks Tunnel are now allowed to travel at the mind-bending speed of 25mph, up from the previous limit of 15mph. Back in 2006 the speed limit around what's known as the Eureka Curve was reduced when a routine inspection found the rails through the tunnel were worn. The previous 50mph (!) limit was reduced to 15 to prevent possible derailments. Now that crews have replaced about 5,000 feet of rail between Castro and Forest Hill stations, the higher speed limit will be monitored over the next few weeks and Muni will decide if it can push that speed limit higher.
