Planning Commission vs. the Academy of Art University

New, 1 comment

Tomorrow the Planning Commission will hold a special closed door session at 11am to figure out what the hell to do about the Academy of Art University. It's been no secret that the Commission is not happy with the school, who have a tendency to buy up any available apartment building and convert it into student housing, skirting a lot of planning code and housing rules, as well as racking up a slew of code violations. A few months ago, the Board of Supervisors passed legislation that encourages universities to create new student housing instead of purchasing existing buildings in an attempt to preserve rental housing stock. The Planning Commission will consult with the City's legal counsel whether to initiate litigation against the school for all the illegal dwelling conversions and rampant code violations.
