Yesterday the Board of Appeals rejected a request by the Golden Gate Park Preservation Alliance to re-examine its earlier decision denying the group's appeal of the Beach Chalet Soccer Fields project. The new fields would replace natural grass fields with artificial turf, add additional playfield space, and install 60' stadium lights at the west end of Golden Gate Park. Opponents were concerned about the lights and the safety of the turf, while supporters heralded the increased playtime and reduction in crime. The Planning Department and the Recreation and Park Commission approved the project, and the first appeal in August was denied. Opponents say their next step is to ask the Coastal Commission to reconsider its approval of the project. [Ocean Beach Bulletin]
