San Francisco Travel has estimated that the city is losing $2 billion in meeting and convention business because of space constraints at Moscone. The expanded center would help make the city more attractive to meeting planners and fill rooms at surrounding hotels. Hotel owners and the Supes are expected to pull together to increas the hotel room occupancy tax to 16% to raise the bucks for more Moscone Center expansion. Most likely we could raise the money taxing the clients of AirBnB, but that's probably not going to happen, and besides, hotels are just another business expense for most convention travelers, right?
