"A night in an apartment in one of these houses was my introduction to Berkeley in the early 70s. It was a strange night but I fell in love with Berkeley and moved here shortly after." One of the many reminiscences on Berkeleyside's look at two classic brown-shingled, multi-family houses for sale for $1.00 each, currently located at the edge of UC Berkeley's campus. Which would explain the apparently high tenant turnover. Of course, with the price come stipulations– you have to move them to a new location (zoning permitted, of course) and renovate them. In the days before power lines and Planning Commissions, picking up one of these balloon-framed redwood numbers and rolling it to a new location was no big deal, done with horses and cheap labor. We still have cheap labor. [Berkeleyside]
