Private Gardens Go Public For a Day

"Stoping and talking to the tourists is part of the fun, because they're out of breath, they're looking for any excuse to stop," said John Cowen, who has a garden visible from the Greenwich Steps on Telegraph Hill. "They're like, 'What's that plant?' And you make up stuff, and they get it, and they laugh." This past Sunday, the Garden Conservancy had one of its Open Days programs where homeowners along the Greenwich Steps open their gates and allow visitors to view their gardens. SFGate has an excellent writeup on the event, and an even better gallery. [SFGate/photo via Yelp]
