Raising the Rents

A 164-unit building at 639 Geary is looking to raise the rents of its 33 low-income tenants, and City Attorney Dennis Herrera isn't having it. Back in 1988, the development of the building received $18 million in tax-exempt bonds in exchange for 20% of the units being rented to low-income tenants, but the owners say the agreement expired in April and has notified the residents of the rent hikes. The City Attorney will ask a San Francisco Superior Court to rescind the rent increases until the legal proceedings are worked out. [SF Examiner/Shutterstock]
