At today's hearing, the Board of Supervisors will vote whether to urge the Secretary of the Navy to christen a ship as the “U.S.S. Harvey Milk.” Proposed by Supervisor Weiner, the legislation aims to recognize LGBT service members and celebrate the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Harvey Milk himself served in the Navy during the Korean War.
The request was initiated by Congressman Bob Filner of San Diego, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Service Committee, and the Supes will vote on whether to endorse the idea. The San Francisco Veterans Affairs Commission has already voted to support the resolution.
