Fighting Words

"We're staying," said HopeNet Cooperative operator Catherine Smith. HopeNet, San Francisco's oldest cannabis dispensary, has been ordered by the feds to shut down its operation within 45 days or the property could be seized and the owners could get hard time. Catherine Smith and her husband Steve collected 1,200-odd petitions from co-op members and neighborhood supporters and faxed them to Northern California U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag's office. "We're a cooperative," said Smith. "Even if I wanted to shut down, there are 1,200 votes saying we should stay open." [SF Examiner/image via Shutterstock]
