The very famous golden fire hydrant at 20th and Church streets that saved the Mission District during the 1906 fires is repainted gold every year on the anniversary of the Great 1906 Earthquake. Unfortunately this morning it was accidentally painted silver. You see, the ceremonial painting of the hydrant happens between 5:40am and 6:00am, so the painters couldn't clearly see that the metallic paint they had purchased was actually silver (because it was still dark). It was also discovered that there was a mix-up at a local Lowe's Hardware Store, so the cap showed gold even though the paint was silver. No word yet on if or when the SFHA plans to fix the mistake.
