The last bit of news we had on the Alamo square Park shoe garden was that it was temporarily removed to make room for a renovation to a nearby bathroom. Unfortunately a new development states the opposite. Local Addition is reporting that Connie Chan, Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the Rec and Park Department, said the removal is permanent. "In Alamo Square, there were hundreds of shoes piled with plants, and because many shoe materials were not biodegradable, the shoes became an environmental hazard," Chan said. "With the goal to provide ecological sustainability in our parks, in October 2011, RPD removed the pile of shoes." [Local Addition/photo via Sergio Ruiz]
