People have been asking about the new Trader Joe's/CVS that is slated to open in the former Cala Foods building at Califronia and Hyde streets. There's been lots of progress with the $3 million renovations to the building, so we did some digging. To refresh your memory, the original project planned for the site four years ago was six to eight stories of about 100 condos atop ground-floor retail. That proposal got squashed real quick, and in 2011 developer Prado Group came back with a plan to renovate the surprisingly well-appreciated building to house Trader Joe's and CVS, all while keeping the trademark swooping concrete roof designed in 1960 by Dudley Wynkoop. Construction began early this year, and the original construction goal was to reach completion by in the fall of 2012. They recently got building permits to add the tenant signs (Trader Joe's and CVS) in September, but when we checked in with Trader Joe's, there was no opening date scheduled yet. By comparison, some of their other stores have openings scheduled through the end of November. Looks like the Fall 2012 opening date will come and go before the stores are open.
