Transgender Pride Flag in Castro

Last night transgender activists and LGBT supporters raised the transgender pride flag on the Castro flagpole for the first time. The event followed a ceremony at Harvey Milk Plaza and a march from the Civic Center in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20. There was some back-and-forth with the Board of Merchants of Upper Market and Castro when it was first proposed to fly the flag at half mast. The merchants were concerned about the stability of the huge flag itself and pedestrian safety, since no flag has ever been set at half mast on the giant flag pole (for those exact reasons). An agreement was reached to set the flag at full mast, and it will fly all day today. [SFist/Photo: SFist]
