No Smoking!

Supervisor Eric Mar has introduced legislation that would make landlords designate their apartment units as smoking or nonsmoking and disclose to tenants and in advertising. In a totally unprecedented move, landlords and tenant advocates have joined forces to support the proposed new ordinance. Landlords are for it because smoking in units causes all sorts of problems like increased maintenance costs. Currently it's legal to smoke in apartments unless the lease states otherwise, and proposal would not affect existing leases. Owners of buildings with 50 or fewer units would need to designate their units smoking or nonsmoking by December 2013, while larger buildings would have until December 2014. The proposed legislation could go before the Board of Supervisors as early as next month. [SF Examiner/photo: Shutterstock]
