Rendering for new PianoFight space at old Original Joe's location [Rendering: PianoFight]
You heard it here first - tomorrow theater group PianoFight will break ground on a new theater complex with a restaurant and bar at the old Original Joe's at 144 Taylor Street. The group is well-known for their interactive audience formats, like a choose-your-own-adventure play series, and secured a 10-year lease from the family that owns Original Joe's and the building (the restaurant relocated to North Beach in January). The new theater spot will feature rehearsal and office spaces, two 54-seat and 96-seat theaters, and a 60-seat restaurant and bar with a cabaret stage in the front. The space will be designed by Said-Jonathan Eghbal (of Hops and Hominy and Monk's Kettle fame), and though floorplans aren't quite ready yet, we'll have em for you as soon as they go public. If all goes according to plan, it should be set to open mid-2013 - making it the first new live performance space to open in the proposed Arts District. Looks like that Mid-Market Arts District idea isn't quite so dead after all.
