2nd Street to Get Hot New Makeover

LiveSOMA reports on Second Street's proposed new $6-8 million makeover by the city that will attempt to make the street less of a terrifying place to walk and bike. The Department of Public Works held meetings in September to ask residents how they wanted the street transformed, resulting in four different design variations. The designs all had key components in common though, including enhanced bulb-outs on the sidewalks for foot traffic, widened sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, and bus stop improvements. DPW is undertaking massive streetscape improvements throughout the city as part of a $248 million bond was approved by voters back in 2011. Construction is estimated to begin in mid-2014, but the next public meeting will be held in early November of this year. [Live SOMA; Curbed SF previously/Photo: SFDPW]
