499 Illinois Street in San Francisco's Mission Bay is still vacant 18 months after Alexandria Real Estate Equities purchased the building. The firm bought neighboring 409 Illinois at the same time, and that one is 100% leased by biotech firm FibroGen. Biotech and technology firms continue to look at the 499 shell space that sits directly on the waterfront, but none are biting - which "kind of sucks," according to Alexandria's CEO. They're banking on Mission Bay growth to help with filling the space, with a $1.5 billion hospital under construction and more than a thousand housing units coming up.
