Market Street's Strand Theater Gets a New Life

New, 3 comments

Today the Planning Commission will vote on a proposal to rehab The Strand Theater into a live performance space for the American Conservatory Theater. The former movie theater was constructed in 1917, but has been vacant since 2003. ACT will rehab the theater, with an associated rehearsal space/black box theater, costume and sound/ lighting facilities, offices, and a ground?floor café. There have been a slew of support letters submitted by neighborhood organizations and performing arts groups, and Planning staff is on board because it continues the historic theater function and will help revitalize its stretch of Market Street. Sounds like a win-win to us!
