Haight Ashbury Improvement Plan Moving Forward

Reps from the Haight Ashbury Merchant's Association and other neighborhood groups met with the Planning Department on Wednesday to start moving forward with a longer-term plan to improve the public spaces on Haight from Central Street to Stanyan. The efforts started last year when HAMA approached then-Supervisor Mirkarimi to discuss improvements to public spaces in the Haight. They wanted to address common issues without gentrifying or altering the character of the neighborhood. The new plans will include things like improved street lights, decorations for the holiday season, public art installations, and occasional planned street closures for public celebrations. The goal is to define and implement a longer-term plan in time for the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love in 2017. The first public meeting to talk about the plan will be on Wednesday, October 24th, from 6-7:30PM at Urban School. [Uppercasing/Photo: Frank Kovalchek]
