Paying to Play

The new Mission Playground formally reopened a few weeks ago, but some residents aren't happy about having to pay to use the new soccer field. Before the soccer field was renovated with artificial turf, the asphalt lot was used for pick-up games by many of the area's residents. Now the Rec and Park Department rents the field on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to San Francisco Pickup Soccer, an organization that charges players between $5 and $10 per person to play in a game. The departments says the soccer field has open play hours from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, but many of the locals have gone to nearby Jose Coronado Playground to play for free. Mission Local has more on the story of one resident who has started a petition to end the practice of renting out the soccer field, and has collected 50 signatures. [Mission Local]
