Think of the Children

It's with heavy hearts that we tell you Oakland unveiled its new budget on Monday that calls for significant cuts to community favorites like Children's Fairyland (that this here blogger quite enjoyed as a little one) and the Oakland Zoo so that police services don't have to make more drastic cuts. What to blame? Abolishing redevelopment funds. "It's not clean and neat. We wish it were," said Mayor Jean Quan. "For California's older, larger cities, like Oakland, losing these redevelopment funds has been very, very tough." [SFGate/photo via Heather David]
