On Tuesday, we told you that the city of Berkeley is deeply concerned about a rat-infested vacant lot on the corner of Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street that's bringing some serious ugliness to an otherwise lovely strip. Prominent Berkeley business owner Ken Sarachan bought the lot in 1994. The city agreed to forgo the existing liens on the site if Sarachan developed the property, which he said he'd do but still hasn't. Shoot forward to current day and the city's fed up. Yesterday, the City Council voted unanimously to file for "non judicial foreclosure" on the lot. Sarachan has to either pay off liens on the property or the site gets sent to auction. With interest, the total liens come to $640,000. [Berkeleyside/photo via CalEJ.org]
