A report commissioned by the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California has found that hospitals, not tourism, is the no. 1 industry in San Francisco. The report states that San Francisco hospitals push $15.3 billion a year into the economy and make up about 18 percent of the city's workforce. "Clearly tourism is an important part of the economy that brings in new dollars every day," said Jim Lazarus, vice president of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. "But it's clear that our growth in the past decade has been in medicine." [SF Gate/photo via Jeff Davis]
