Oakland Wants Parklets

Oakland's jumping on the parklet bandwagon by starting its own parklet pilot program. This week, the city issued a set of guidelines for eager participants. Oakland's planning on issuing permits for eight parklets in a test pilot program. Like San Francisco, the person or business applying for a parklet permit must carry the appropriate insurance, agree to maintain the parklet, pay the application fee and permit fee ($1,133.73!) and then "demonstrate community support." Even cooler: Oakland's model is heavily based on San Francisco's, which was developed by Andres Power of the San Francisco Planning Department. Applications are due October 24. [Oakland Local]
