If you visit the old site of the Bay Meadows racetrack in San Mateo, you'll see the beginnings of a street grid and maybe some water and drainage lines. The 83-acre site is fit to become a massive multi-use, transit-oriented development centered on the Hillsdale Caltrain station. It was approved in 2005, after much opposition from groups looking to preserve the 75-year-old racetrack. "That might be a little optimistic, but I think it can happen," said San Mateo Mayor Jack Matthews. [SF Examiner/click rendering for a larger version]
