Swimming and Biking and Running

Thank goodness the mega storm San Francisco was anticipating didn't actually materialize, because it would have made San Francisco's annual Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon pretty much unbearable on Sunday. "Three-quarters of the way up the sand ladder, I thought I'd lost my quads - I had to go pick them up," laughed first-time participant Nicky Samuels, who placed first in the women's division. Almost 2,000 competitors joined Samuels on Sunday morning for the triathlon, which includes a 1 1/2-mile swim in the Bay, an 18-mile bike ride through the Presidio and Golden Gate Park, and an 8-mile run that ended at the Marina Green.
