Park Problems

The recent rash of late-night violence in Golden Gate Park has Mayor Ed Lee thinking we should close the park at night. One of former Mayor Gavin Newsom's last bits of business before he left office was to draft legislation to close Golden Gate and McLaren parks between 1 and 5a.m. "People using the park during those hours aren't using it for the right reasons," Recreation and Park Commission President Mark Buell said. Mayor Lee's been discussing the matter with supervisors whose districts border the park. Supervisor Carmen Chu supports a nighttime closer, but Supervisor Eric Mar said that although he's concerned about safety too, he first wants to explore whether existing laws are already a solution to the violence.
