The Department of the Environment recently conducted phone surveys and focus groups to find out how well San Francisco residents understood the city's mandatory recycling and composting laws. "People said, 'I know what I'm doing,'" said Mark Westlund, spokesman for the department. However, a third of what gets sent to the landfill could actually be recycled, and another third could be composted. The big item that residents are confused about is plastic. With the exception of plastic bags, almost all plastics can be recycled. Are you not sure what trays goes where? Check out the department's "Ecofinder" tool, found on this website. There's also an iPhone app. You enter the item in question and your zip code. Then, like magic, it'll tell you where to recycle it.
