If you've ever lived, worked, played or strolled on Telegraph Avenue near UC Berkeley, you know about the rat infestation. Or have at least seen a furry creature or two scurrying about. The bulk of the problem comes from a vacant lot on the corner of Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street, where the rats congregate because people leave food out for them. The city of Berkeley's environmental health division is finally trying to solve the problem. They're using low-toxic poisons, cutting back bushes that the rats like to live in, and try to discourage the locals from leaving food on the lot. Godspeed, Berkeley. [Berkeleyside]
