Curbed Cup First Round: (6) Bernal Heights vs. (11) Outer Sunset

New, 7 comments

The Curbed Cup, our award to the San Francisco neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 'hoods competing for a glorious JPEG of an illustrated trophy. This week we'll have two matchups per day, and all the results and full tournament bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends in the wee hours the next morning. Let the eliminations commence!

It's not uncommon for Curbed to post about Bernal Heights on a weekly basis. What can we say? We're quite fond of the neighborhood. From the locals fighting over the historical relevance a vintage Coke mural to a Bernal Heights architect hosting a coloring contest for neighborhood kids, the folks on the hill seem to really enjoy being a part of a close community. (And hey, how about that view from the top of Bernal Hill?)
Purists would prefer we stop sectioning off the Sunset, but 9th Avenue is just too different from La Playa Street. Besides, we've had a few Outer Sunset residents shudder when we've inquired about anything east of Sunset Boulevard. Per real estate agents standards, we'll say the neighborhood's boundaries are between Sunset Boulevard and Great Highway and Sloat Boulevard Lincoln Way.
