A reader asks:
What's up with the old Virgin Megastore space at Market & Stockton? I've heard rumors that either Muji or Uniqlo were possibly going to occupy that space. Is there a way to find out who is moving in?We turned to a professional, fashion blogger Kristin Philipkoski at Stylenik. Kristin's been hearing rumors of Uniqlo as well, and her take is that Uniqlo always seems to open new stores near H&M's- and there's one across the street in the Westfield Centre and another on Powell- so while the location made sense, she had no hard intel to share. A little googling of "2 Stockton Street." however, brought us to the San Francisco Business Journal and news that girly retailer Forever 21 had snapped up the lease earlier this year: 53,000 square feet for an aggregate rent of $70,000,000. Girly, but tough: privately-held Forever 21, based in Los Angeles, has been sued by Anna Sui, Gwen Stefani and Diane von Furstenburg for ripping off their designs, plus its local sweatshop suppliers were profiled in the documentary Made in LA. To be fair, labor issues are there for Muji and Uniqlo as well.
A quick look at Craigslist retail jobs brought us this- retail management positions with training in Japan for a company with over 900 stores. Uniqlo has (our count) 936, while Muji has 740ish. Maybe Uniqlo is headed for the Metreon?
