Craigslist Scammer Gets Jail Time

New, 4 comments

Rachael Marie Smith, a scammer who used Craigslist to falsely advertise and collect deposits for an apartment in the Richmond district, has been sentenced to two years in state prison. To recap: Smith scammed at least 18 victims out of what they thought were apartment despots. Smith collected deposits that ranged from $5,100 to $5,600 for an Inner Richmond apartment that she advertised on Craigslist. When the "tenant" wanted to move in, Smith would delay the move-in date, and her victims wouldn't hear from her again. Prosecutors say she collected around $110,000 altogether. Smith's bad behavior caught up with her, and she eventually skipped town, only to return shortly after to turn herself in. With credit for time served and good behavior, Smith could end up serving only about a year, Assistant District Attorney Evan Ackiron said. [SF Appeal/previously Curbed SF]
