Rachael Marie Smith, a scammer who used Craigslist to falsely advertise and collect deposits for an apartment in the Richmond district, has been sentenced to two years in state prison. To recap: Smith scammed at least 18 victims out of what they thought were apartment despots. Smith collected deposits that ranged from $5,100 to $5,600 for an Inner Richmond apartment that she advertised on Craigslist. When the "tenant" wanted to move in, Smith would delay the move-in date, and her victims wouldn't hear from her again. Prosecutors say she collected around $110,000 altogether. Smith's bad behavior caught up with her, and she eventually skipped town, only to return shortly after to turn herself in.
