Honoring a Hero

New, 1 comment

Back in September, Mayor Ed Lee requested that the Chinatown recreation center (that's currently being renovated) at 1199 Mason Street be named the Betty Ong Chinese Recreation Center. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission approved the name yesterday. Betty Ong grew up in Chinatown and attended San Francisco's public schools, and she frequently played at the center with her siblings. Ong was a flight attendant who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. She was reportedly the first person to report that the plane had been hijacked. "(Ong) is truly an American hero, and we are proud to have a recreation center named after her," said department general manager Phil Ginsburg. [SF Appeal]
