The newly-restored Palace of Fine Arts is scheduled to re-open on Friday after an extensive renovation. It was built to last less than a year, and it was still standing, but barely, when a seismic retrofitting was called for back in 2003. The $20,000,000 restoration, half of which was raised privately, not only outfit the 96 year old structure for future earthquake activity, but also provided for new landscaping, walking paths, and even garbage cans.
