New Leaf, a community-based health center open since 1975, is packing up and closing. The center provides mental health, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS services predominately to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents. The closure comes as a result of several rent increases and health care costs, said Eileen Shields, spokeswoman for the city's Department of Public Health. "The impending closure of New Leaf is a great loss to the LGBTQ community," Barbara Garcia, deputy director of health for the city said in a statement. "Its important legacy will be continued by existing LGBTQ community organizations." [City Insider]
