North Beach business owners propose fee structure for landlords that don't make effort to rent or lease commercial space. Empty storefronts hurt the neighborhood, thinks Dan Macchiarini, a small business owner operating in North Beach. And he's had enough! Macchiarini and other local merchants have been working with Board of Supervisors President David Chiu (who reps the neighborhood) to "create legislation that would fine landlords with vacant storefronts as an incentive to bring in businesses." In the end, the proposition falls into the hands of the Small Business Commission, who already admit that the process is moving slower than expected. May the best merchant win. [SF Examiner]
