Cooler Buddha Heads Prevail

Why artist Zhang Huan went from provocative performance art — say, having dogs eat off his naked body — to the comparatively contemplative nuclear Buddha statue: "I spent more than 10 years doing performance art. I was young and energetic, and I had strong hormones in my body, so I wanted to use them up. Now I'm 45, and my hormone levels are dropping." Also, according to the SF Arts Commission, the sculpture's a bit off-kilter because engineers demanded it touch the ground only directly on top of parking garage pillars, lest it fall through.
