In 1954, the Upper Market Safeway Was... Pretty Much the Same

New, 7 comments

Besides the orientation of the storefront and the logotype — well, and the building itself — not much has changed at the Safeway on Market and Church between 1954 and 2010. That is to say, it's still a supermarket in a concrete moat, and off in the distance, the new Mint still stands proudly. This, and other before-and-after shots are among the Lower Haight (and area) insights that Haighteration brings us today in a two-parter. Some places look eerily unchanged, while others are barely recognizable but for a glimpse of a wall that looks somewhat untouched. Takeaway: this guy's really good at aligning before and after photos.
