Palling Around With Google

New, 1 comment

The Wall Street Journal today looks at the possibility of Google bringing us gigabit broadband. In the wake of the city's dead Google Wi-Fi project, says the story, the "do no evil" search giant is a a bit gun shy: "Above all, we're interested in deploying our network efficiently and quickly." In other words, any whiff of community opposition might send them and their fast fiber packing. San Francisco explored a fiber optic system as far back as 2007, but the project would've been too expensive to do alone. Says one of the guys who helped take down the Wi-Fi proposal years ago: "You never know with Google, they might be totally ready to give this away." But are we willing to rename ourselves San Googlesisco? [WSJ, previously]
