Sit-Lie Upheld in Palo Alto

New, 5 comments

As long as we've got sit-lie on the mind, a judge in Palo Alto has upheld the city's own sit-lie law, saying that maybe it can be challenged on First Amendment grounds in an appeal, but that it otherwise doesn't violate the Constitution's equal protection clause. The police force there says they mainly enforce sit-lie in response to citizen complaints, and that in the past they've used it on "high school and college students, nonprofit solicitors and downtown merchants, panhandlers, and a group of people performing yoga exercises." Take that, yoga exercisers. [Merc]
