At one point, it seemed like the sky was the limit for the SFMOMA's planned 225,000 square foot expansion, a buildout that would house Don Fisher's extensive art collection. It turns out that going bold with a "strong architectural statement" meant going international — though we probably knew that all along. The "informal" process that the museum director described in December resulted in a shortlist of eight that includes worldwide heavyweights David Adjaye, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Steven Holl, Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), Snøhetta, and Renzo Piano. (The remaining two were unknown to our Deep Throat, though it appears from the looks of things that no locals made the cut — not to mention Mario Botta, architect of the current building.) Now, if the museum sticks to its game plan, the lucky finalists, who ostensibly didn't have to do anything to make the list, will be interviewed and invited to submit their designs.
