TIMBY?

Have you met El Palo Alto? Perhaps you know it as the Stanford Tree (doesn't that sound like some type of make-out spot?). The trillion-year old Redwood tree is directly in the way of California's High Speed Rail project, and the NIMBYs are going nuts about how even altering it slightly will "negatively change their way of life." True, we agree that cutting down a California Historic Landmark to make room for transit is a jerk move, but as Leanne Maxwell over at the SFist points out, maybe they can just build a tunnel through it?
