Yesterday Mayor Gavin Newsom met with seven-time U.S. Bocce Ball Champion Benji Tosi to shovel dirt in celebration of the start of construction for the controversial bocce ball courts at the Justin Herman Plaza. "“These two new bocce ball courts are a great example of activating unused public space,” Newsom said. “This innovative public-private partnership shows creativity in finding solutions to positively impact our city as a whole and help foster a community of new bocce ball lovers.” The courts will use materials like crushed oyster shells and redwoods, making them the highest quality courts currently available in the city.
