Funds for New SoMa Jail Go Looking for Voter Approval This June

New, 9 comments

While the city plans a new police headquarters in Mission Bay, there are also plans in the works to build a new jail roughly where the current Hall of Justice is, on 6th Street. The new buildings are all part of a larger scheme to replace the Hall of Justice, which the SF Examiner notes is not earthquake-ready. While it would cost $435 million to build a new jail, having to evacuate a crumbling jail post-quake would hardly be ideal — and it would cost "tens of millions" just to temporarily put up prisoners before a new jail gets built. Therein lies the sell, as most of the money for the project would come ostensibly from a bond measure going to voters this June. So, citizens: worth it, or not worth it?!
