Where To Now, SFMOMA?

New, 6 comments

The ink hasn't dried yet on the deal to bring Gap founder Don Fisher's art to the SFMOMA (if there is any ink... the Chron quotes a museum spokeswoman as saying, "We have a handshake, but not many details beyond that."), but speculation has begun already on how the museum's going to grow to showcase all that art. As it stands, SFMOMA owns the Heald College building to its south on Howard, and wants to buy the adjacent fire station from the city. Also on the table: another international competition to design the 140,000-square-foot addition. And then the thunder on the horizon: a historic conservation district along New Montgomery Street that may, just may, be one day expanded into SFMOMA's target zone, possibly frustrating dreams of expansion.
