As part of the Balboa Park plan to apply a heavy dose of spit and polish to the area around the BART station, the 108-year-old Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse will be turned into a multi-use art center. The readapted building will end up housing a theater, cafe, exhibit space, art studios, and "community-conscious" retail. Not bad for a building once destined for the rubble heap, and though funding's tight, the director of the effort's feeling good about their direction. If all end's well, the new center should be done between mid-2012 and early 2013. [SF Examiner]
