We haven't heard much of a peep about the YMCA rebuild in Chinatown, so we headed over last week to check out the site. Construction is proceeding at about the normal San Francisco pace: agonizingly slow. They started work in 2008, with the grand opening scheduled for 2010. This project is one to keep your eye on: not only is it of historic significance, having sheltered Chinese immigrants going back to the 1920s, but the $20 million upgrade will add three and four stories above the refurbished pool and is seen as part of a much-needed "revitalization" of the neighborhood. No pressure! Also, there's still no word on whether or not they'll be allowed to tack on a giant glowing logo. Guess we'll find out in 2010.
